OBI-WAN KENOBI LIGHTSABER: FACTS & HISTORY

Luke Skywalker was "not a Jedi yet," and Darth Vader was a Sith lord. The first Jedi we see in the film is the strong Obi-Wan Kenobi. While they weren't as popular in the original trilogy, lightsaber duels with Jedi and Sith were always iconic. The lightsaber is "an elegant weapon for a more civilized age," as Obi-Wan puts it.

When "Old Ben" Kenobi fights Darth Vader, his former Padawan, we witness one of the most famous battles. In this scene, we see the classic Obi-Wan lightsaber. However, the prequels made clear that it wasn't his only one.

One of the most important Jedi in Star Wars is Obi-Wan. He has been played by Ewan McGregor and Sir Alec Guinness. Join us as we explore the history of the Obi-Wan lightsaber. We will discuss its color, hilt, and other features.

WHAT COLOR IS OBI ONE KENOBI’S LIGHTSABER?

One of the main characters in Star Wars with a blue lightsaber is Obi-Wan. The Obi Wan Wan Kenobi lightsaber is always blue, unlike other characters who use different colors. The films do not directly mention it, but the lightsabers in Star Wars have meanings linked to their colors. Indeed, Jedi Guardians are connected to the symbolism of the blue lightsaber.

WHY DIDN’T OBI-WAN HAVE A GREEN LIGHTSABER?

Obi-Wan Kenobi's lightsaber is blue. This color is linked to the Jedi Guardians. They value strength, peace, and hope. This comes from the stories about them. This is different from the Jedi Consular. They usually use green lightsabers.

They focus on the spiritual side of the Force. This includes mental clarity, diplomacy, and wisdom. They can yet possess elements of both styles—after all, not many people are as smart as Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The color of a lightsaber serves as a reflection of the wielder's personality and overall attitude. Blue-saber wielders are typically fighters rather than sage masters.

HOW MANY LIGHTSABERS DID OBI-WAN HAVE?

Across the Star Wars saga, Obi-Wan had three lightsabers. We’ll detail each of them below.

OBI-WAN KENOBI’S FIRST LIGHTSABER (STAR WARS: EPISODE I – THE PHANTOM MENACE)

Qui-Gon Jinn's lightsaber is green. Padawan Obi-Wan's lightsaber is blue.

In Episode 1, Obi-Wan's lightsaber looks just like Qui-Gon's. John Williams' great "Duel of the Fates" plays during the movie's epic scenes. Obi-Wan loses his lightsaber while fighting Darth Maul on Naboo. He then falls down a shaft.

  • First Obi-Wan Kenobi Lightsaber Hilt: Obi-Wan's initial hilt, with its straightforward black and gray design, red actuator button, and knobbed pommel, is a perfect example of simplicity over flair. Its resemblance to Qui-Gon's demonstrates that the young Padawan is still in the early phases of his Jedi development.

OBI-WAN’S SECOND LIGHTSABER (STAR WARS: EPISODE II – ATTACK OF THE CLONES)

Obi-Wan creates a nearly identical duplicate of his first lightsaber for his second (shown in Episode 2) following Qui-Gon's.

Obi-Wan Kenobi keeps the design of his lightsaber to honor his late master. He does this even after becoming a Padawan under Anakin Skywalker.

Obi-Wan has to grab a new saber during the first fight of the Clone Wars. Count Dooku takes his second saber, and it is never returned to him. However, that saber never really belonged to Obi-Wan.

  • Second Obi-Wan Kenobi Lightsaber Hilt: As part of Obi-Wan's quest, this saber displays homage to Qui-Gon Jinn by having the same basic hilt design as his original.

OBI-WAN KENOBI’S THIRD LIGHTSABER (STAR WARS: EPISODE III – REVENGE OF THE SITH, THE CLONE WARS, EPISODE IV – A NEW HOPE)

Obi-Wan Kenobi's third lightsaber is different from his first two. It reflects his growth as a Jedi Master. It also shows his individuality and confidence in battle.

This lightsaber appears in The Clone Wars series. He uses it in Episode 3. This happens during his intense fight with Anakin Skywalker.

Anakin has turned to the Dark Side and is now Darth Vader. In one of the most exciting moments in Episode 4, Obi-Wan uses it again before facing Vader. This allows Vader to knock him out so Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa can escape the Death Star.

  • Third Obi-Wan Kenobi Lightsaber Hilt: The distinctive design of this hilt, which has a tapering neck that flows into a bowl-shaped emitter, is a little bigger than his previous two. There's a lengthy, gold ignition switch and a black grip with silver embellishments. Luke Skywalker's lightsaber hilt from Return of the Jedi was modeled after Obi-Wan Kenobi's third one.

WHAT LIGHTSABER FORM DOES OBI-WAN USE?

Obi-Wan is a master of Form III: Soresu and uses it. This indicates that Obi-Wan's approach to lightsaber dueling is more cautious. Soresu is a more peaceful style since it emphasizes defense and protection more than aggressive action. But thanks to his lightsaber proficiency, Obi-Wan Kenobi can balance battle and Force awareness by winning duels with calculated movement and reduced danger.

It simply implies that Obi-Wan prefers to defend others rather than going for an opponent. Picture parries, counterattacks, and calm fighting that made Obi-Wan one of the best generals in the Clone Wars.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE OBI-WAN KENOBI LIGHTSABER AFTER A NEW HOPE?

Obi Wan's lightsaber does not have a clear fate after his fight with Darth Vader in A New Hope. This is not explained in the current Star Wars canon. According to Expanded Universe Legends, Vader removed it as a prize from the Death Star. This might offer a chance for a later plot in the new canon.

The new Obi-Wan Kenobi series will start on Disney+ in 2022. It will show what he did with his lightsaber before Episode 4. This means we haven't seen the last of Obi-Wan Kenobi's lightsaber. Fans think early promotions might reveal a Jedi with a famous lightsaber from the Star Wars series.
