The Meaning of the White Lightsaber

Blue lightsabers, held by the Jedi, and red lightsabers, wielded by the Sith, were the two hues of lightsabers in the Star Wars universe, as was shown in the first episode IV: A New Hope. Later canon developments extended the range of colors available for Star Wars lightsabers. The meaning of lightsaber colors remained constant, nevertheless, as it consistently conveys the user's connection to the Force and/or their place in their Order, be it Jedi, Sith, or somewhere in between. The history and legend of the white lightsaber, one of the rarest hues in the entire Star Wars world, will be covered in detail below.

How Did White Lightsabers Come About?

Ahsoka Tano, who first appeared in the canon as a teenage Jedi student (Padawan) working under Anakin Skywalker during the Clone Wars, is strongly linked to white lightsabers. In this initial appearance, Ahsoka helped Anakin and Obi-Wan Kenobi lead an army of Republic clones in defeating the opposition droid army on Christophsis. Later, Ahsoka helped rescue Jabba the Hutt's son, Rotta, who had been abducted. Ahsoka Tano's lightsaber was green at the moment, but it later turned into two green lightsabers, one of which was a little shorter than the other. During the Clone Wars, Ahsoka's two green lightsabers helped her in numerous conflicts.

How, then, did Ahsoka switch to white blades? According to E.K. Johnston's 2016 book Star Wars: Ahsoka, Ahsoka departed the Jedi Order on bad terms after the Clone Wars and was left without her typical weapons. She faced and defeated the Sixth Brother, an Inquisitorius member, in a duel during an uprising on the farming moon Raada. Ahsoka was able to make two new lightsabers with curved hilts using his kyber crystals. However, the crystals changed from red to white throughout the blade-making process, and they were subsequently refined to become white.

As far as we currently know, that incident is when the white lightsaber—or silver lightsaber—first appeared in the Star Wars universe.

What Does a White Lightsaber Mean?

A white lightsaber's significance is strongly linked to Ahsoka Tano's departure from the Jedi Order. The white lightsaber, a hue and a symbol of good, is strongly associated with people who follow their path for the benefit of others.

  • Purifying Light: To make a white lightsaber, a kyber crystal must be cleansed or purified, which requires the owner to possess sufficient moral rectitude or purity to influence the crystal.
  • Independence: White lightsaber wielders have no loyalty to the Jedi Order or the Sith, as demonstrated by Ahsoka Tano. They follow their routes, led by their own emotions and thoughts.
  • Strength of Will and Determination: White lightsaber wielders possess the drive and willpower to create their destiny and establish a connection with the Force since they follow their path.

Ahsoka Tano: After the Fall of the Jedi Order

Ahsoka Tano and her two white lightsabers helped the rebels onboard the freighter spaceship. The Ghost fought the Galactic Empire fourteen years after the Jedi Order fell. She first supported the mission as an undercover spy (codenamed Fulcrum), but as she fought with Sabine Wren, Kanan Jarrus, Ezra Bridger, and the other Spectres, she later gave crucial leadership to the rebels. They fought the vicious Darth Vader, who she was shocked to learn was the former Jedi Knight she had been an apprentice to.

White Kyber Crystals: How Are They Made?

Adegan crystals are white kyber crystals that are found in the Adega system, in contrast to their more colorful relatives. Adegan crystals came in five primary varieties, including Mephite crystals that required a tiny bit of the user's Force Power to activate. It is also possible to create white kyber crystals by purifying or cleaning another crystal. This technique gives the crystal its luminous white (or "silver") brilliance by removing its color.

Why Are Ahsoka Tano's Lightsabers White?

As we've already mentioned, Ahsoka's attempt to make lightsabers out of stolen kyber crystals resulted in their becoming white instead of red, which is the Sith hue. This wasn't a chance occurrence.

Ahsoka was unable to use the traditional blue lightsaber since she had been expelled from the Jedi Order after the Clone Wars. The red lightsaber was likewise out of the question because she was also free from the dark side's corrupting influence. Despite her support for the Jedi cause, she was essentially impartial. In essence, the kyber crystals were cleaned during the making process, changing their color to one that reflected her status as an independent person. This is the origin of Ahsoka Tano's lightsaber and the meaning behind the white lightsaber: a force for good that is unencumbered by the constraints and obligations of bureaucracy.
