What Your Lightsaber Combat Form Says About You

The general public typically believes lightsabers involve waving colourful swords that make loud noises. As you move beyond the early phases of fandom, you notice that this fighting is more subtle than it seems. Seven different "traditional" fighting forms are acknowledged in Star Wars. Understanding the various fighting styles will help you maximize your customized Star Wars lightsaber.

The seven styles of lightsaber combat focus on the special features of this powerful weapon. These include the blade's light weight and its ability to cut in all directions. Which style is your favourite? Let's investigate.

Lightsaber Form 1: Shii-Cho / The Way of Sarlacc / The Determination Form

It is the first and most fundamental form of a lightsaber, and Jedi learning more advanced forms use it as a training tool. This form has aspects of traditional swordplay, as it originated thousands of years before the lightsaber. It uses sweeping, two-handed attacks and has an emphasis on disarming before using lethal force. You can see Luke Skywalker use Shii-Cho in Episode IV.

Lightsaber Form 2: Makashi / The Way of the ysalamiri / The Contention Form

The Sith Order used Shii-Cho in a lightsaber fight. Therefore, the Jedi Order created Makashi as a countermovement. Count Dooku's preferred one-handed technique is renowned for its grace and skill.

Lightsaber Form 3: Soresu / The Way of the Mynock / The Resilience Form

The invention of blasters made it necessary to develop a strong defence against them. This is Soresu, an extremely defensive style that emphasizes body movement to avoid blaster fire and tight lightsaber deflection. It is also applicable to close-quarters combat. The most frequent connection is with Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Lightsaber Form 4: Ataru / The Way of the Hawk-Bat / The Aggression Form

Ataru's motions are acrobatic, fast, and aggressive. While this fighting method seems impressive, it is dangerous to use.

It is not suitable for anything but short fights because the practitioner gets tired quickly. A large amount of open space is also necessary to allow for enough freedom of movement. Yoda is a well-known ataru practitioner.

Lightsaber Form 5: Shien / Djem So / The Way of the Krayt Dragon / The Perseverance Form

To change the very defensive Soresu style into a more offensive one, Shien and Djem So evolved significantly. Djem So uses quick and powerful counterattacks with a lightsaber against an opponent. In contrast, Shien mainly focuses on deflecting blaster fire from attackers.

Lightsaber Form 6: Niman / The Way of the Rancor / The Moderation Form / The Diplomat’s Form

Niman combines key parts from the five earlier styles. This helps him create a balanced dual-lightsaber fighting technique. This style is called "the Diplomat's Form." It is designed for Jedi Consulars and others who do not focus on combat preparation.

Light saber Form 7: Juyo / Vaapad / The Way of the Vornskr / The Ferocity Form

Juyo is a physically and mentally taxing attacking technique that is incredibly aggressive, even furious. Jedi view this approach with caution (less so the Sith), as it is stated that its practitioners grow susceptible to corruption from the dark side. This is particularly true of Mace Windu's invention of the Vaapad version of this technique. Vaapad hits quickly, bluntly, and without warning.
