Kyber Crystals in Star Wars: Colors, Meanings, Types, and More
What is a Kyber Crystal?
Both Jedi and Sith used kyber crystals, which are rare crystals that are naturally found on different worlds throughout the galaxy, to make their lightsabers.
It was known as a kaiburr crystal in the past. Jedi younglings were required to locate their own lightsaber crystals in the Crystal Cave on the ice planet Ilum as part of their training. The Jedi poetically referred to the crystal's unique shine as "the water of the kyber." Legend has it that ancient Sith superweapons were fuelled by larger and rarer kyber crystals.
Instead of permanently connecting with one person, kyber crystals might be tempered to resonate with the nature of several people through a specific procedure that involves heating in a furnace and hammering. Within seconds of being held by a new user, the color of these tempered crystals would change when they were inserted into a weapon such as a lightsaber.
What are the characteristics of Kyber Crystals?
Throughout the galaxy, kyber crystals—rare, Force-attuned crystals—grew naturally, albeit their concentration varied by region.
By resonating with the Force and concentrating energy in a unique way, these crystals displayed a kind of "collective consciousness" that verged on sentience. They were able to communicate nonverbally with living things as well as with one another. According to certain theories, the changes in the kyber crystal structure were comparable to a sentient being's emotional fluctuations.
What is the composition of Kyber Crystals?
Kyber crystals contained both inorganic and biological components. They were impenetrable to fire and hammering because of their extraordinary resilience, which allowed them to endure the extreme temperatures and pressures found in the cores of huge stars.
Kyber crystals were resilient enough to withstand the powerful explosion of a lightsaber's power grid, such as those brought on by improperly assembling the emitter matrix, and were renowned for their complex internal patterns.
How are Kyber Crystals connected to the Force?
Kyber crystals would only react to life, including plants, and would not transfer heat to inanimate materials like a towel or a sheath. The crystal would warm when handled by a person, but its temperature would remain constant.
Many scientists thought that depending on the surrounding energies, kyber crystals may change shape. These crystals had no apparent lifespan and formed in an ordered fashion, gradually adding to their prismatic structure. All kyber crystals are attuned to the Force, regardless of their size, which could vary from tiny as a fingernail to enormous sizes. But if laser energy is not directed correctly into the crystals, it may impair their lattice structure, just like radiation does to biological cells.
How are Kyber Crystals formed and mined?
Only pure kyberite veins included true kybers. Impurity-containing crystals were regarded as fake kybers. Although it lacked kyber crystals, the closely similar material ranite was denser and more durable.
After forming beneath extreme heat and pressure, kyber crystals were usually carried to the surface by tectonic movements along fault lines. They might be discovered in their primary sites, growing freely in lava tubes, caverns, fault zones, and within veins of kyberite, or they could be mined from secondary deposits in streams, where they had been carried over great distances.
What Is the Role of Kyber Crystals in Lightsaber Construction?
The most well-known location for kyber crystals was the Crystal Cave of Ilum, where they were used to concentrate energy into the lightsaber's characteristic plasma blade. For tens of thousands of years, these crystals had a deep connection with the Jedi, urging them to hear their song and absorb their teachings.
In order to gather their own crystals, which they subsequently utilized to construct their lightsabers, Jedi younglings traveled to these ice caves. Each Jedi found a gem that spoke to them as the Force led the selecting process. The crystal was still frigid to the touch for those who were not meant to receive it. But to the people the crystal selected, it emanated “music” and “harmony,” attracting them.
Kyber crystals were colorless before they were selected, but they usually colored blue or green—though other colors were possible—once they were paired with a Jedi. The black Darksaber, the yellow Jedi Temple Guard blades, Ahsoka Tano's white lightsabers, and Mace Windu's purple lightsaber were notable exceptions. The character of the bonded owner dictated the ultimate color of the crystal.
It was also possible to modify the hue of lightsaber blades or kyber crystals by changing their frequency or angle, as Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker did with his former Padawan's lightsabers.
Due to their innate "light side energy," kyber crystals withstood attempts by practitioners of the dark side to employ them in lightsabers. For instance, when Darth Vader tried to use a crystal that belonged to Jedi Master Kirak Infil’a, it caused him to see powerful visions.
The characteristic red or crimson-bladed lightsabers associated with the Sith were the consequence of a Sith using the Force to control and corrupt a kyber crystal, which caused the crystal to "bleed" as though it were a living thing. But according to the Chronicles of Brus-Bu, a corrupted kyber crystal might be "healed." After the Sixth Brother was defeated, Ahsoka Tano famously cleaned two crystals she had taken from his lightsaber, turning them white in the process.
Kyber crystals were well known for their unmatched capacity to generate tremendous power and channel energy. A lot of people tried to make artificial kyber crystals, but because they were manufactured, they were extremely unstable and prone to explosive reactions. It was impossible to employ a crystal against its will because it would "resist" attempts to forcefully study or harness its power. People who worked closely with these stones frequently suffered from headaches, insomnia, and an obsession with them.
Kyber crystals were painstakingly carved and faceted by the Jedi for millennia in order to improve their energy output and eliminate flaws. According to Galen Erso's theory, faceting was necessary for larger crystals in order to minimize energy diffraction brought on by the addition of lasing media as well as to remove these defects. As seen in the DS-1 battle station, accurate faceting could greatly increase the energy pulse that the crystal generated and, with the help of containment mechanisms, focus it into a collimated beam of tremendous power.
Erso also proposed realigning the lattices of the crystals along the dark or "nighttime" axis of the Force in order to further improve energy. This would enable technology to compel the crystals to comply by controlling their diffraction tendencies. The energy yield that results could either be controlled and used, or if unregulated, it might destroy large population centers and bring catastrophic disaster.
Strong weapons like kyber bombs and blasters can be made with kyber crystals.
For example, a huge kyber crystal that Saw Gerrera destabilized absorbed so much energy that it burst when it reached critical mass, destroying a neighboring Star Destroyer as well as the freighter carrying it.
Lightsabers were not the only weapon powered by kyber crystals. A few specimens of kyber bombs and kyber blasters that were attempted to be made are kept in the Jedi Archives.
What Are the Different Types of Kyber Crystals?
Different kinds of kyber crystals might be used to make lightsabers or other objects, and some of them could create special effects in the lightsabers they powered.
7.1 Adegan Crystals
The rare, Force-reactive stones known as Adegan crystals, a kind of lightsaber crystal commonly utilized by Jedi, were mostly found in the Adega system, though they were also found on the planet Halm. Mygeeto and portions of the Cularin asteroid belt were among the other known sites.
Jedi were able to create a connection between themselves, the Force, and their weapon because Adegan crystals had a special connection to the Force. As a result of this connection, lightsabers that contained Adegan crystals sent off a subtle Force signature that other Jedi could detect.
Ilum crystals had structural similarities with the mephite and pontite varieties of Adegan crystals, which are renowned for creating the sharpest lightsaber blades. Even though they were identical, Ilum crystals were far more frequent among Jedi until the Great Jedi Purge because they were found in entire caves of superior crystals. On Ilum, the majority of Padawans participated in the custom of making their first lightsaber.
Ilum crystals were mostly blue or green, with a few purple ones here and there. Despite having a weaker Force connection than Adegan crystals, they had the qualities required for a Jedi's weapon. These crystals produced strong light bursts when stimulated by resonant frequencies, which other lightsaber parts then collected into a rod-like beam. Obi-Wan Kenobi's first lightsaber was made using an Adegan crystal.
Adegan crystals mined from Ilum were used by the Sith Empire to build a stealth armada during the Cold War.
The Galactic Empire outlawed the ownership of any crystal that could be used to make a lightsaber when Order 66 was put into effect.
Types of Adegan Crystals:
- The most prevalent type of Adegan crystal was kathracite, which was followed by danite and relacite. Usually employed in saber training, these crystals were less efficient at concentrating energy than their rarer cousins.
- Mephite was a standard Adegan crystal commonly used by Jedi.
- The rarest and strongest kind of Adegan crystal was pontite. It was very hard to locate and radiated a strong aura that chilled its wielder's skin and temper.
7.2 Barab Ingots
Rare lightsaber crystals known as "Barab Ingots," or "Barab ore ingots," were discovered on the planet Barab I's radiation-scorched surface. Some were able to find ingots that could be used as focusing crystals in spite of the difficult circumstances. These ingots formed a clear, powerful blade that blazed nearly to the point of disintegration when incorporated into a lightsaber.
The blade had a flaming character due to its continuous exposure to Barab I's radiation, which frequently caused anything it impacted to fire. Examples of Barab ingot blades may be found in almost every prevalent lightsaber color.
7.3 Christophsis Crystals
The Outer Rim planet Christophsis, a crucial battlefield in the early Clone Wars, was home to a particular kind of kyber crystal known as a "Christophsis crystal." The planet was important to both sides for different reasons, but the Jedi Order valued it because of the pure kyber crystals that were generated in its crystalline forests.
Lightsaber blades made with Christophsis crystals produced incredibly strong blows by amplifying kinetic energy in a unique way.
7.4 Dantari Crystals
On Dantooine, a particular kind of lightsaber crystal called a "Dantari crystal" was found inside the eggs of the indigenous Kinrath animals. As seen by the Meetra Surik Crystal, these crystals were thought to represent the alignment of their wielder. The Jedi had a strong preference for Dantari crystals prior to the discovery of superior crystals on Ilum.
7.5 Dragite Gems
Dragite gems were tiny, brittle, and dull kyber crystals that were found in the Expansion Region's D'olop mountain range on the agriworld M'haeli. They were among the most fragile kyber crystals available and were challenging to form into a lightsaber. But when they were successfully integrated, they produced a loud hum and a shockwave when they hit a solid object. The target may be injured or confused by these shockwaves. The worth of dragite gems was 14,000 credits.
7.6 Ghostfire Crystals
Rare lightsaber crystals known as "ghostfire crystals" were found on a few worlds in the Outer Rim. Only one particular rock formation on a small number of planets was the source of these crystals. These ghostfire formations, which were frequently seen atop mountain summits, were made up of delicate spires of transparent stones. These crystals created a virtually translucent blade that flashed dimly when incorporated into a lightsaber hilt, creating an illusory afterimage of the saber and its wielder.
These blades were unique not only because they were colorless but also because they were nearly silent, without the characteristic hum that other lightsabers have.
7.7 Ilum Crystals
One kind of kyber crystal that was discovered deep beneath the caverns of the snow-covered planet Ilum was called an Ilum crystal. They were very important to the Jedi and were considered to be among the best crystals for making lightsabers. In a custom known as "The Gathering," Padawans frequently traveled to Ilum, where they would enter the Crystal Cave, identify their crystals using the Force, and then return to the entrance.
An Ilum crystal is so valuable that it can make someone rich, according to pirate commander Hondo Ohnaka.
7.8 Jedha Crystals
The moon Jedha, which is in the Mid Rim Territories, is home to a particular kind of kyber crystal known as Jedha crystals. Jedi and Church of the Force adherents held these crystals in great regard as holy relics from Jedha. Jedha crystal-equipped lightsabers produced powerful, concentrated blades.
Some Jedha crystals were recovered from the rubble of Jedha City after it was destroyed by the first Death Star's superlaser. The term "cracked Jedha crystals" refers to the fact that many of these recovered crystals were broken and cracked. The blades of lightsabers fueled by broken Jedha crystals were erratic and jagged, in contrast to their complete counterparts. The cost of these broken crystals was 8,000 credits.
7.9 Kimber Stones
On the moon of Y'ness, a particular kind of kyber crystal known as kimber stones was found. These stones were formerly excluded from the traditional construction of lightsabers because they produced a nonlethal blade when utilized in a lightsaber.
But in the end, some Jedi decided to use them in their weapons. After the Jedi Order was overthrown, Kimber stones were sold for 6,500 credits on the underground market.
7.10 Krayt Dragon Pearls
The last chamber of a krayt dragon's gizzard contained shiny, vibrant stones known as krayt dragon pearls. These stones eventually got rounded from continuous movement and helped crush the creature's meal. Some of the colors of pearls were blue, green, red, white, and black.
If properly cleaned, prepared, and installed—a difficult task—they may be utilized in a lightsaber because of their special refractive qualities. As evidence of having killed a krayt dragon, a mark of valor among Tusken Raiders, these pearls were extremely valuable and frequently valued at over 100,000 credits each.
Pearls were generated by both Common and Greater Krayt dragons, but the Greater Krayt's pearls were larger and therefore more expensive.
7.11 Lorrdian Gemstones
Lightsabers were enhanced with crystals known as Lorrdian gemstones. Through careful monitoring of minor body language clues, the enslaved Lorrdians created kinetic communication to engage with one another during the Kanz Disorders, which enabled them to predict the movements of others, including their Argazdan oppressors.
Certain gemstones were endowed with these prophetic powers by some Force-sensitive Lorrdians. Installing these gems in a lightsaber improved the user's ability to deflect blaster bolts and improve their overall defense by allowing them to better read their opponents' moves.
7.12 Nishalorite Stones
On planets with strong magnetic fields, nishalorite stones—a kind of kyber crystal—were found. These crystals were worth 12,500 credits and were usually dark-gray or blue-black in color. When oriented toward magnetic north, the dense blades of lightsabers containing nishalorite crystals intensified in intensity.
7.13 Seeker Crystals
Seeker crystals were a particular kind of kyber crystal that, when used in a lightsaber, produced a pink blade. By attuning the blade to its wielder and enabling the user to sense adjacent beings through the Force, these crystals allowed the user to identify hidden hazards without precisely identifying their source.
Dark speculations were sparked by the enigma surrounding the origins of Seeker crystals. Others conjectured that they originated outside of the known galaxy, that they were exchanged on private black markets, and that their initial use had nothing to do with powering lightsabers.
7.14 Solari Crystal
One of the Jedi Order's oldest and strongest lightsaber crystals was the Solari crystal. Only a Jedi with a pure spirit and everlasting commitment to the light side of the Force could wield this bright orange stone. Its bearer needed to have a pure heart in order for it to continue to work, and it was immune to corruption by the dark side.
7.15 Sorian Crystals
A particular kind of kyber crystal called a sorian crystal was distinguished by its unusual capacity to reflect light in a manner akin to fire. These crystals produced a blade that, when used in a lightsaber, released a burst of force with each strike.
7.16 Synthetic Kyber Crystals
Known for their instability and explosive properties, synthetic kyber crystals were made artificially. These green-glow Force-attuned gems were frequently employed by Jedi and Sith to make lightsabers. But they were extremely volatile due to their synthetic origin, therefore the Galactic Empire banned their ownership.
Gangster “Happy” Dapp hired a young smuggler in 4 ABY to deliver a batch of these artificial kyber crystals. An Imperial Security Officer caught the smuggler during a contraband search at Longstar Marketplace on Burnin Konn. In order to evade capture, the smuggler shocked the officer and rushed down a nearby mine shaft, where they exploded the crystals to collapse the entrance and stop following Imperial stormtroopers.
Dapp, furious that the crystals were gone, dispatched Tryken, his bodyguard, to go up against the smuggler. The elderly Zabrak was vanquished in spite of the altercation, and the smuggler and their sister Riley were compelled to repay the debt for the lost crystals.
7.17 Tainted Nightsister Crystal
The Nightsisters created kyber crystals known as "Tainted Nightsister Crystals" to be used in lightsaber-like weaponry. Dathomir's mystical ichor was used to soak it, corrupting its Force connection and creating this crystal. The crystal created an unpleasant, suffocating green smoke when it was employed in a blade.
7.18 Thontiin Crystals
During the Jedi Order era, thontiin crystals were an uncommon kind of kyber crystal that were rarely employed as the lightsaber's core. They were prized for their special healing abilities, though, which helped Jedi healers ease patients' suffering and streamline care.
Thontiin crystals acquired a new use on the battlefield during the Clone Wars. A Jedi Knight attempted to swap out their broken Ilum crystal for a Thontiin crystal after their lightsaber suffered severe damage in combat. After doing so, the Jedi found that using a lightsaber enhanced the crystal's healing abilities, enabling the bearer to withstand extreme agony while engaged in combat.
Despite the initial reluctance of the Jedi Order's healers to see Thontiin crystals employed as weapons, some of these crystals were eventually used in battle due to the dire circumstances of the Clone Wars.
7.19 Varpeline Crystals
Varpeline crystals were a kind of kyber crystal that came from Mearalis II, an Outer Rim world. These crystals, which were well-known for their remarkable density and hardness, were frequently employed in industrial cutting gear.
Varpeline crystals were used to create lightsaber blades that could cut through some of the toughest and thickest materials more effectively than other blades and made a harsh sound when they came into contact.
7.20 Zophis crystals
One kind of kyber crystal that was found on the planet Zoph in the Outer Rim was called a Zophis crystal. Jedi Padawans traveled to Zoph to find these crystals so they could make their own lightsabers long before the Galactic Republic and the Separatist Alliance engaged in Clone Wars. Jedi found that the blades made from Zophis crystals had destructive and unstable qualities because of the crystals' special resonance, even though they could readily cut through durasteel plating.
However, the use of Zophis crystals eventually decreased as Ilum and its kyber crystals gained prominence within the Jedi Order. Zoph had been taken over by the Separatists by the time of the Clone Wars (22 BBY to 19 BBY), which made it dangerous for Jedi to visit the planet. Zophis crystals were still present in some lightsabers, but they were now very uncommon and cost 11,000 credits.
